Are We Logging In or Leveling Up?

I’ve been learning Spanish on Duolingo for over 308 days. I’m at level 38. If you’d asked me a few months ago what I was proudest of, I would have said the Streak.

But here’s what I discovered: logging in for two minutes a day keeps a fire emoji alive, but it doesn’t make you fluent. That realization changed not just how I learn languages, but how I think about business, goals, and growth.

In business, we love visible metrics: days worked; emails sent; phone calls made; meetings attended. These numbers feel productive. They’re easy to track and easy to share.

But a streak only proves you showed up. It doesn’t prove you grew.

Same in language learning. I watched people post their 500-day Duolingo streaks (congratulations– that’s real dedication!) on social media with pride. And yet, having peeked behind the curtain, I knew you can click one button for 60 seconds and keep that streak alive. The number says nothing about whether you can actually order coffee in Madrid or negotiate a contract in Mexico City.

In corporate life, we have “level 38” equivalents too: job titles, years of experience, number of direct reports. All respected. All incomplete pictures.
I’ve met VPs who couldn’t lead a team out of a parking lot. I’ve met individual contributors with five years of experience who had twenty years of wisdom. The level is a signal, not a proof.

After 308 days, I stopped asking “Did I keep my streak today?” Instead, I ask: “Did I get better today?” Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it’s no. But it’s always an honest question, and it always points toward real growth.

In business, instead of asking “How many days have I been here?” or “What’s my level?”, start asking “What can I actually do now that I couldn’t do six months ago?” and “Would someone pay me more for what I know now?”

I still love learning on Duolingo and watching my streak grow higher every day. The streak builds a habit. Habit builds consistency. And consistency, when paired with intentional effort, eventually builds skill.

So, let’s not confuse logging in with leveling up.

Celebrate the streaks and build on top of them.
